Description
A large and impressive wall hanging featuring cattle, with textured carving and assorted inserts, by accomplished wood and mixed media sculptor, Robyn Gordon, who beachcombs on the Transkei Wild Coast for her beautiful, natural finds. Her personal statement on this work says:-
“This piece represents the long, flat, pristine beaches where I walk at the Wild Coast ….. most times with only the cattle for company. It is known to be a thin place where the veils are thin. A place where you can feel your loved ones who have passed beyond the veil. I find it to be a healing place. Within the carving are pieces of The Boundless, a yacht that was wrecked there a few years ago; a pottery shard symbolising the many middens along the Wild Coast, which is indication that ‘Strandlopers’ (beachcombers) lived there. The circle of objects symbolises the throwing of the bones by Sangomas (witchdoctors). There is a resident Sangoma in the village close by. I like to include stitching in many of my carvings, a symbol of mending and healing; and cowrie shells in memory of my daughter who loved to collect white cowries.”
