Sadly Colleen died suddenly in Johannesburg in April 2019. She was a larger than life character, who will be sorely missed in ceramic circles as she ran The Pottery Studio in Bryanston where adult classes and specialised ceramic workshops were presented, and she was also Chairperson for the Ceramics Southern Africa, Gauteng Region.
She said of her work;- “Strong forms with extremely colourful surfaces interest me. My work is vessel based and the forms have been wheel thrown. Using ceramic underglazes, glazes and ceramic lustres, I apply colour to the bisque work in a seemingly random manner. The way the colours interact with each other excites me and I enjoy building up the layers. I decorate fast and my style is very loose.”
Colleen gained a National Diploma in Art & Design – Ceramics from the Johannesburg Art College in 1979. She participated in Regional & National Ceramics Southern Africa exhibitions and group exhibitions. She was Highly Commended for her ‘Splash Pot Installation’ at the CSA Regional exhibition in 2010 and won a Highly Commended award for large coil pot at the CSA National exhibition in 2012.
She was bright, fun, friendly and talented; R.I.P. Colleen.
