mixed media painting 295 x 420 mm by Zimbabwean born artist Val Myburgh now living in Stanford, western Cape, South Africa
This painting was part of a Big Five post office competition. They requested the 5 animals to be relatively realistic and to be A3 size. I only managed to complete the buffalo before the deadline date but decided to complete all of them regardless. They are all drawn on a background of various game reserve maps which I put together using existing maps. I covered the maps with a few coats of diluted gesso and then dirtied the surface with rubbings of paint and spilt coffee. The basic outline of each animal plus its footprints were drawn and then filled in with intricate patterns and designs. There are all sorts of creatures hidden in the pen work. Once all the inking was complete I used thin washes of acrylic inks and acrylic paint to build up the colour.
