Original art, as the name implies, is just that. So there is nothing more gutting than finding the painting that sings to you has already sold. It makes sense, therefore, to get in touch with a gallery ahead of the opening, and arrange, if possible, a personal preview. Most galleries won’t mind if the buyers are serious. Such was the case last week, ahead of our opening on Saturday, and it was a pleasure to facilitate the buyers in question with the purchase of their two beautiful nudes by Nadia Kisseleva.
“My nudes are sensual, confident, completely free, and uninhabited by their nudity under a male artists’ view. A male gaze over the nude model is strongly connected with possessiveness. My nudes are females who are very much in charge of their own integrity and free of this kind of attachment.”
Nadia is one of our longest standing artists; we have been showing her work for 19 years since 1995. In all that time, she has never lost her vision, and belief in herself to be a painter of substance and a proponent of artistic intellect rather than commercialism.
We had moved our gallery from London a year previously and she came to High Wycombe to meet me to discuss her work. We sat in the churchyard and I distinctly remember thinking, as I viewed her portfolio amongst the gravestones, that here was an artist worth her mettle. And she has proved me right ever since.
