Description
“This artwork helped to secure a commitment from the South African government to end the industry of captive lion breeding in the country. Drawn in 2020, I included an expiry date of 2025 on the can to reference the age at which a lion born in captivity can expect to lose its life in a canned hunt. Exhibiting it in 2025 allows us to reflect on the state of the industry now. Sadly the wheels of justice turn slowly, and the practice of captive lion breeding and canned hunting continues.”
This is a powerful drawing in Derwent Art Pastel Pencils on 300gsm Snow White Daler-Rowney Canford card by conservation artist Martin Aveling who won the Environmental Artivism category at the prestigious David Shepherd Wildlife Artist of the Year Awards (WAY) in London in 2024. Martin is a signature member of ‘Artists for Conservation’ and he coined the phrase ‘wildlife artivism’ to encourage stronger calls to actions in the creative output of working wildlife artists.
