Description
A large narrative oil painting by classically trained artist Mary-Jane Alexander, who was born in Zimbabwe, but now lives in UK and spends a lot of time in Italy. This extrovert artist has never come to terms with the grey and cold of an English winter and in such months, she reverts to her memories of Africa and the warmth, strength and congeniality of the women in particular. Of her figurative African paintings, she says:-
“I suppose one could castigate me for painting the people of my childhood… it’s not the Africa of
today as I left Bulawayo 48 years ago ..but it’s my safe place; my imagination. It comes to my rescue every grey dull winter in England. It sits in my soul . I draw the curtains and escape back home to Zimbabwe. I draw on these images and my memories freely to express sunlight, movement and space.”
