Description
A bountiful original oil painting by classically trained artist Mary-Jane Alexander, who was born in Zimbabwe, but now lives in UK and spends a lot of time in Italy. Mary-Jane excels at still-life and her use of light and thick application of paint highlights her classical training. Of this painting she says:-
“I supposed that all little girls from the age of four went to ballet lessons. I certainly did…
This meant a car ride into Bulawayo from our small holding which was 14 acres of land six miles outside of town .
I do remember being on stage dressed as a bee at that age, but best of all was wearing a very pale pink tutu, aged seven and dancing on the stage in the Bulawayo city hall . It was a solo performed to “Roses from the South”. It is lovely lyrical music and it made me remember dancing all my life. Whenever I paint roses I hear this waltz in my head, Roses are terribly difficult to paint; they are relatively formless… it’s their colour and perfume that makes them memorable…..but they always dance for me.”
