Born and raised in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, Rika started her journey in clay in 2016 after taking a creative sabbatical from her career in the corporate world. Being creative has always formed an integral part of her life and although she dabbled in several mediums prior to becoming a potter, clay seems to have captured her heart.
Porcelain and stoneware is her preferred medium. Most of her pieces are hand-built, individually designed, and aim to be multi-functional.
“I enjoy experimenting with texture and combining it with sculpture to tell a story. My work is often accented with metallic lustres as I feel that it brings life to a piece. I often wondered why, but I grew up in the 80s and in a time when glitter and sparkles were reserved for special occasions, and only at night. I suspect that my love for using gold in my artwork is clearly my inner child’s demand to ‘put on the glitz’.”
The pieces on show at Fillingdon Fine Art are part of a range Rika refers to as “Inner Child”. They reflect poses and attitudes which are directly childlike and which we seem to lose as an adult.
“I make what I enjoy, and what inspires me” says Rika.
