Born in Glasgow, Alan grew up and was educated in Rhodesia. He studied Art at Walthamstow School of Art in Essex, from where he graduated with a National Diploma in Design (NDD) and in Fine Art – (Painting and Sculpture). After leaving Walthamstow, Alan returned to Rhodesia where he began a career in advertising, design and illustration. Alan now lives in Oxfordshire, and since retiring as a freelance graphic designer, he is now a full-time artist.
Style – Pushing the bounds of the media to produce personalised, random, accidental, and considered mark-making, using line, texture, light and colour, are his prime objectives. He seeks to produce clean, contemporary work, whilst retaining a traditional and naturalistic feel.
Media – In addition to painting landscapes, still life and portraiture in oil, watercolour, acrylic and pastels he also enjoys working in clay to produce figures and portrait heads from life. Recently he has been working on creating mono woodblock prints using Acrylic paint on various surfaces including paper, canvas and board.
Exhibitions – Alan’s work has been shown in Nottingham; France; Brussels and at various local exhibitions throughout Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire. Alan has had self-portraits selected for the Ruth Borchard Competition on two occasions. He is an active member of Bucks Art Society and Oxford Art Society.
Collections – As well as many private collectors, Alan’s work also hangs in public collections, namely, Aylesbury Vale District Council Offices and Stoke Mandeville Hospital, Bucks. Two of his works were purchased by The House of Lords Art Collection.
